INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL BY-ELECTION CANDIDATES
NOMINATION DAY – Nominations will be accepted on Monday, September 24, 2018 from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon only. All nomination papers must be complete and turned into the returning officer at the Village Office (5217 – 52nd St.) during that time. No late or early nominations will be accepted.
ADVANCED POLL (if more than one eligible candidate is nominated) – Saturday, October 20, 2018 with the poll open from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Village Office (5217 – 52nd St.)
ELECTION DAY (if more than one eligible candidate is nominated)- Monday, October 22, 2018 with the poll open from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm at the Village Office (5217 – 52nd St.)
TERM OF OFFICE – From swearing in through to swearing in of Council elected in the civic election in October 2021
Number of Councillors required – 1
Remuneration and Per Diem – Currently, Council is paid $25.00/hour (maximum $200/day) for Regular, Special and Committee meetings as approved by policy; as well as a monthly honorarium of $300 for Councillors and $400 for the Mayor.
Out-of-Village mileage and subsistence are paid according to the Village Legislative Policy L:16. Current mileage rate is $0.50 per kilometre; meals – breakfast – $14.00, Lunch – $17.00 and Supper – $20.00; Hotel, parking and other related expenses are reimbursed at actual cost by receipts. Council members are also eligible for a $30 monthly allowance for cell phone data plans.
Campaign Signs – Election signs may not be posted on public property. The following is from Land Use Bylaw 07-2010 regarding campaign signs:
Campaign signs for federal, provincial, municipal or school board elections are allowed on private properties for no more than thirty (30) days, or such other time as regulated under provincial or federal legislation provided that:
(i) such signs are removed within one (1) day after the election date, and
(ii) the consent of the property owner or occupant is obtained, and
(iii) such signs do not obstruct or impair vision or traffic, and
(iv) such signs are not attached to trees or utility poles, and
(v) such signs indicate the name and address of the sponsor and the person responsible for removal
